Limited View functionality facilitates the inclusion of coupon images in Mailings by allowing you to specify how many times each Member can view a coupon image, and for how long the coupon is valid, or a combination of the two options. Because coupons that are delivered via email often end up posted on websites frequented by thousands of bargain-hunting visitors, Limited View functionality can be useful is restricting coupon usage to your Members rather than to the entire Internet community.

If a Member attempts to view a Limited View Image that he or she has viewed more than the maximum number of times, the following default image will be displayed in place of the coupon:

Too many views.jpg

You can alternately specify an image to be used as the "Too Many Views" image in place of the default image.

If a Member attempts to view a Limited View Image after the designated expiration date, the following default image will be displayed in place of the coupon:

Offer expired.jpg

You can alternately specify an image to be used as the "Coupon Expired" image in place of the default image.

If the Member has not viewed the image more than the maximum number of times, nor has the coupon expired, then the requested coupon will be displayed, and Enterprise will record the fact that the Member successfully viewed the image. Enterprise will consider all views of the same image by the same Member within a five-minute period to be a single view, in order to accommodate Web browsers and e-mail clients that must retrieve the same image multiple times in quick succession.

If Limited View has been enabled for your Site, you'll see the following controls when adding an image to a templated mailing:

Specifying a value of 1 or greater in the "Maximum Views per Member" box makes the image a Limited View image (in the context of that Mailing only) and also makes the "Coupon Expiration" box available. Expiration (which is optional) can be represented either as a fixed date, or as the number of days, months, and years after the date the Mailing is sent.

Recommendation: Don't set "Maximum Views per Member" to less than 3. In some cases, your Members may legitimately view the same coupon image multiple times over a span of more than five minutes. For example, a Member might view the image at work just before leaving for the day, and again at home to print the coupon; or multiple family members might be using different computers but accessing the same e-mail account. If you'd like to allow each Member to forward the coupon to a few friends, but still prevent successful dissemination to public websites, then set "Maximum Views Per Member" somewhat higher.

Further Recommendation: An expiration date and other restrictions should be visible within the coupon image itself. Members who successfully view a coupon image can save the image to their computer and then distribute it to public websites, bypassing the restrictions enforced by Limited View functionality. To limit your liability in such cases, you should place business-appropriate limitations within the visible content of the image itself, rather than relying only on the Maximum Views and Expiration features of Limited View.

Automatic Coupon View Resetting

If a Mailing contains a Limited View coupon, and the Mailing is re-sent to a Member, the coupon views for that Member will be automatically reset for that Mailing. This allows you to use Limited View images in Mailings which, over time, you expect the same Member to receive more than once. For example, a birthday Mailing containing a Limited View coupon is sent each year (a Triggered Mailing) to a Member 7 days before their birthday. When the member receives the same birthday message the next year, the coupon views are automatically reset so they can them view the coupon again. The resetting is also done when a Sent Mailing containing a Limited View image is resent to a Member using the Send to a Single Recipient option.

Using Limited View functionality in non-templated Mailings

To use Limited View functionality in a non-templated Mailing, you'll need to modify the <IMG> tag of the coupon image and add a "maxviews" attribute and, optionally, an "expiration" attribute, a "maxviewsimage" attribute, and an "expirationimage" attribute. The coupon image must be hosted in your Image Library: for technical reasons, Limited View functionality is not available for images that are hosted elsewhere. The "Too Many Views" and "Coupon Expired" images, however, do not need to be hosted in your Image Library. To obtain the URL of the image, click on the image thumbnail on the Manage Images screen: the image will open in a new browser window or tab, with the full URL of the image in your browser's address bar.

Fixed expiration date values should be entered in m/d/yyyy format. Rolling expiration date values should be entered in the format nnnDnnnMnnnY where nnn is a number between 0 and 999 (inclusive), and D, M, and Y (case-insensitive) refer to Days, Months, and Years, respectively. Any combination of Days, Months, and Years can be provided, as appropriate. For example, "2M" represents 2 months, "14D" represents 14 days, "1Y" represents one year, and "1y3m14d" represents 1 year, 3 months, and 14 days from the date the Mailing is sent.

Here is an example of an image with no expiration date:

Here is the same image, but with a fixed expiration date:

<img src="http://yourhostname.fbmta.com/shared/images/2147483649_20070327040346.gif" maxviews="3" expiration="12/31/2012" />

Here is the same image, but with a fixed expiration date and unlimted views:

<img src="http://yourhostname.fbmta.com/shared/images/2147483649_20070327040346.gif" expiration="12/31/2012" />

Here is the same image with a "rolling" expiration date of 14 days in the future:

<img src="http://yourhostname.fbmta.com/shared/images/2147483649_20070327040346.gif" maxviews="3" expiration="14d" />

Here is the same image, but with a fixed expiration date and the Too Many Views and Coupon Expired images specified:
